PAULA CAVOVAS DEL VAS

For London-based Spanish designer Paula Canovas del Vas, accidents are an integral part of design. The Central Saint Martins graduate draws on the Japanese aesthetic concept of Wabi-Sabi—a view centered around the acceptance of imperfection—in the development of her whimsical womenswear. This approach, rich with playful chance and ingenuity, is well exhibited in her eponymous collection. Short dresses explode with vibrant colors and unexpected textures. Muted shoes surprise with reverse peaked toes and sculpted kitten heels, while bags closely resemble pom-poms with their bright and bouncy fringe. Rendered in saturated hues, sculptural tops and jackets reinvent conventional silhouettes, boasting outlandish shoulders and hemlines. Paula Canovas del Vas channels rather than controls the chaos around her, accepting its imperfections to produce a cheeky array of convivial looks.
